New customers gained

At the window of their food truck in Dortmund, Mritunjay Kumar Verma and Sanja Jelenković press dough into shape each morning. The bread is handmade, cooked fresh, and folded while still warm. Then come the fillings: Butter Chicken, Paneer Makhani, Chicken 65. Generous portions, layered with care. Orders move out quickly, handed to waiting couriers or customers at the counter.

“We make our own bread every day,” says Mritunjay. “Then we shape the bread into a taco and fill it with the desired curry.”

The idea for Desi Taco came from a simple observation at Mritunjay’s previous workplace. “I saw my colleagues at lunch,” he remembers. “They’d tear naan, scoop some curry, and fold it like a taco. It just clicked. That’s how Desi Taco started … from something simple and familiar.”

The truck quickly built a following in Dortmund. And as demand grew, so did the need for a reliable way to reach more people. That’s when they decided to join Wolt.

From a queue on the curb to clicks on Wolt

The team already knew Wolt as customers.

“I was myself a Wolt user,” says Mritunjay. “Most of the time when I ordered food, the first thought that came to mind was Wolt.” That familiarity made the decision easy.

Wolt already fit how they worked: quick prep, careful packing, food out fast and kept fresh. The data saved in the Wolt Merchant Portal soon became indispensable.

Quote from Mritunjay Kumar Verma, Co-founder of Desi Taco: “We look at the numbers every week. If something isn’t performing, we’ll tweak it: rename a dish, change a photo, or test a price.”

The result? Since listing on Wolt, more than 90% of their orders now come from delivery and they’ve reached over 1,000 new customers.

Tacos depend on timing

If you’ve ever eaten one, you know: a Desi Taco only works when it’s warm and intact. Press too early and the bread droops. Wait too long, and the heat escapes.

So the team built their own rhythm, a tight 10-minute prep cycle, and trusted couriers to keep the pace. “The speed was a key thing,” they explain. “Couriers usually pick up within ten minutes. That made delivery really work for us.”

“We didn’t want to discount, we just wanted people to see us”

In May 2025, Desi Taco switched on Wolt Ads. The idea was to be seen, especially by people nearby who were already using the app to decide what to eat.

Their approach was simple:

  • Use automatic targeting to appear in relevant places.

  • Pair the ads with strong product photos.

  • Monitor the new vs. returning customer mix.

And it worked. Since ads went live on May 31, they’ve seen a measurable uplift in performance and in additional revenue, respectively. First-time orders increased, and movement on key items improved. For Desi Taco, it confirmed that ads could bring real value without needing to change the product or cut into margins.

What made it work

Desi Taco focused on doing one thing well, fresh, flavorful Indian tacos, and made it easy for people to find, order, and come back.

That’s what growth looks like when it’s done right: steady, simple, and true to who you are.
