Riding safely in hot weather

As temperatures rise, it's important to take extra care while you're on the road.

No matter how you’re riding, hot weather can put additional strain on both you and your vehicle. Taking a few simple steps to keep cool can help you stay comfortable and ride safely throughout the day.

Stay hydrated

When you’re spending time outdoors in hot weather, we suggest fuelling up with plenty of water and healthy snacks. Taking regular sips of water throughout the day before you start to feel thirsty can help you stay refreshed. It's also a good idea to carry enough water with you while you're on the road so you can stay hydrated when you’re riding.

Dress for the weather

Choosing the right clothing can make a big difference when temperatures are high. Wearing loose, light-coloured clothing can help to keep your body cooler in hot weather. Breathable fabrics like cotton can also help improve airflow, keeping you more comfortable while riding.

When spending time outdoors in the sun, it's also important to protect your skin. Consider applying a high-factor sunscreen (SPF 30 or above) before heading out and reapplying it throughout the day. If suitable for your vehicle type, sunglasses and a hat can also help protect you from the sun.

Know the signs of heat exhaustion

Heat exhaustion can develop quickly, especially when you’re riding in warm weather.

Symptoms can include:

  • Dizziness

  • Nausea

  • Heavy sweating

  • Weakness

  • Headaches

  • Feeling faint

Your wellbeing comes first. If you start feeling unwell, stop riding. We suggest rehydrating with water and healthy snacks before deciding whether you're ready to hit the road again. Remember, you can choose if you want to go online and accept orders.

Check your vehicle before heading out

Hot weather can also affect your vehicle. Before you start riding, take a few moments to check that everything is working as expected and your vehicle is in a good state of repair.

For motorised vehicles, we recommend checking tyre pressure, air conditioning (if fitted) windscreen wipers, and fluid levels.

If you're riding a bicycle or e-bike, make sure your tyres are correctly inflated and your bike is in good working order before setting off.

Take regular breaks

Longer daylight hours and warm temperatures might make it tempting to stay on the road for longer periods, but pacing yourself can help you stay alert and reduce the impact of heat and fatigue. Remember you can choose when you go online and if you want to accept orders.
